Chair on Media and Gender and the process of
its establishment.
The chair of UNESCO set up
jointly in 1992, by UNESCO and other educational
or subsidiary organizations mainly for the professors.
The members almost come from universities and
other higher educational institutions. Its chief
goal is to develop the scientific studies, training,
academic exchanges with the widely use of UNESCO
superiority status in educational, cultural
and environmental fields. Until now, UNESCO

Chair on Plant biotechnology was firstly set
up in Peking University. Chair on Media and
Gender in CUC is the 18th Chair established
by UNESCO in China. And it is the first Chair
in China information and communication field.
On September 1st ,2004 , Media
and Gender Institute(MGI) was established by
CUC. MGI aims to promote the goals on harmonious
development of media and gender, to take the
emphasis on media and gender academic research,
to engage in the research on basic and practical
theory and disciplinary establishment, in producing
media products with gender awareness and characters,
in training research staffs with professional
quality and multi-cultural views, in order to
promote the development on media and gender
research.
In October 2004, Mr. Abdul
Waheed khan,UNESCO’s Assistant Director-General
for communication and information, came to visit
CUC. He paid great attention and gave firm affirmation
to the establishment of MGI, the research which
is undergoing and the results which has already
achieved. In order to promote gender equity
awareness through media, the women self-development
and the social civilization progresses, Mr.
Khan suggested that CUC should submit the application
for the Chair on Media and Gender to UNESCO.
In March, 2005, CUC made the

In July, 2005, MGI submitted
the plans of IPDC to UNESCO, with the idea of
setting up training organizations of Women Media

university, giving strong supports to set up
MGI, so to lay the solid foundation to carry
out the Chair Program.
On July 22, 2005, CUC was approved
to establish “Media and Gender” Chair by UNESCO.
That happened only more than four months after
CUC submitted the report. It shows that it is
necessary and urgent to establish Chair on Media

recognition in the related fields studies of

to UNESCO.
